[SOLVED] Couple of questions relating to J-Link EDU

  • [SOLVED] Couple of questions relating to J-Link EDU

I am considering buying a J-Link EDU for hobby purposes but have some questions (if some kind soul has some answers):

    1) What is the current version of (/how old is the current) J-Link EDU model? I understand from the Segger website that they typically support older models with new software at least 3 years after end of life. So I'm interested in when the EOL point might be?
    2) I believe that the J-Link EDU gives access to the various Segger application tools free of charge - is this correct?
    3) The Segger web page for the EDU states that 'it supports unlimited breakpoints in flash memory, additional license required' - do you need this licence for hobby use, and if so how much is it?.

I've never used a J-link debug probe before, so am trying to determine if this is the right tool for my basic hobby purposes. I have been reading various information on the web but have not come up with satisfactory answers to the above - so please excuse my 'noobiness'!
    Thanks.
  • Hi,

    1)
    Current hardware version is V11:

EOL of EDU V11 is not decided yet.

    2)

    3)
The EDU already has this license built-in.

  • Ok thanks Andy, have ordered the EDU - looking forward to using it.

One last question purely out of curiosity - I note from the table you referred to that this model does not support J-Flash, which is not an issue as there are other ways to do this, but I was wondering whether this was a hardware limitation or a licence one?
  • It is a license one. J-Flash is a production software and EDUs are not for production.

  • Keep in mind that there is also JFlashLite which will perform basic flashing of devices on all J-Link units including EDU (I'm pretty sure).

Some of the people I work with prefer it because all they want to do is flash a file to a device and JFlashLite does that with a much simpler GUI.
